4 Tips Every Fire Pit Owner Must Know

  • by

Having a fire pit right by your hot tub is a beautiful setup!  But before you take a moment to bask in the light it provides, make sure you are aware of the following:

Seal the Stones
Most fire pits are built using decorative concrete paver stones. While these are relatively durable they can begin to show signs of wear and eventually erode as a result of constant exposure to the elements. To protect these pavers apply a thin coat of concrete or stone sealant. Make sure the sealant is capable of handling high temperatures and that it is designed specifically for outdoor use. When applying the sealant do not put a thick layer on because this can lead to bubbling, which reduces the effectiveness of the sealant. Source: DoItYourself

Know How to Properly Use the Pit

  • Start your fire small and only use the recommended fire starters. Never use gasoline to start a fire.
  • In a wood-burning fire pit never pile on wood too high because you don’t want burning pellets to spill out.
  • Children should not be allowed near fire pits, which should be supervised by adults at all times. Never leave the fire unattended.
  • Use screens for protection from wind and to prevent sparks from flying out. Avoid using a fire pit when it is very windy. Source: TheSpruce

Avoid Cracking
A hot fire raging in cold conditions can cause pit stress. When installing masonry fire pits in cold regions, footers should be extended to the frostline or built on a reinforced concrete base to reduce risk of cracking. Cracking issues are common, says Newman. Although some cracks are only of cosmetic concern, all should be evaluated. Severe cracks should be patched before continued use. Source: HGTV

Extinguish Flames
When possible, flames should be allowed to naturally subside. Although water should be kept available for emergency purposes. dousing an active fire by pouring water on it can cause rapid temperature shifts that may crack or otherwise damage the vessel. Source: HGTV
